In the bustling world of steel fabrication and engineering, Steelworks stands out as a leader in innovation, quality, and sustainability. As the company prepares for an exciting move to a new facility in Tauriko, General Manager Elliot Fuller reflects on the journey that brought them to this point and the crucial support they’ve received along the way from their trusted accountants, Grace Team Accounting.
A Legacy of Excellence and Resilience
Founded in Tauranga, Steelworks specialises in structural and general engineering, fabricating, manufacturing, and installing steel for both new and existing constructions, including seismic projects. The company’s story took a pivotal turn in 2006 when brothers Elliot and Grier Fuller decided to purchase the business. With backgrounds in civil construction and contracting, they were ready for a fresh challenge.
However, the timing of their acquisition coincided with the onset of the Global Financial Crisis, testing their resolve and business acumen from the start. "We went from an exciting purchase to navigating the turbulent waters of a global economic downturn," Elliot recalls. "It was a steep learning curve."
During these challenging times, the support from Michael at Grace Team Accounting proved invaluable. "We had to set a clear plan to manage cash flow and ensure business continuity," says Elliot. "The banks were tough to deal with, so having Michael to consult and brainstorm solutions with made a significant difference."
Building a Stronger Future
As the economy stabilised, the brothers shifted their focus to growth and innovation. "We wanted to improve our company culture and efficiency," Elliot explains. "We invested heavily in health and safety systems, new equipment, and staff training." These efforts paid off, earning Steelworks certifications such as the Steel Fabrication Certification (SFC) and Site Wise Gold, which underscore their commitment to quality and safety.
Steelworks' investment in plant equipment, including the purchase of crane trucks and CNC machinery and a Plasma Robot, this has allowed them to enhance their operational flexibility and reduce costs. "Owning our cranes has given us greater control over our installations and reduced expenses, while the CNC and Plasma Robot have improved accuracy, and reduced downtime” Elliot notes. "Michael's financial insights were crucial in making these strategic investments with confidence."
Steelworks is not just focused on business growth but also on fostering a supportive and nurturing workplace culture. “We work hard to cultivate a giveback culture, providing education and goal-setting support for team members who want to advance both professionally and personally,” says Elliot.
One of the standout initiatives is their commitment to helping employees achieve financial independence and even home ownership. “Last year, we supported six of our team members in purchasing their first homes, and four the year before that,” Elliot shares. “It’s a win-win situation that fosters an environment of learning, trust, and mutual growth.”
Recognition for Sustainable Innovation
Steelworks' dedication to excellence extends beyond their immediate operations. Earlier this year, they were recognised on a global stage, winning the Constructsteel Awards for Excellence in Sustainability 2024 for their Hinuera Sheds project. This innovative initiative involved repurposing nearly 200 tons of recycled Steltech beams from a demolished building into state-of-the-art storage sheds, showcasing the potential of steel in the circular economy.
"The Hinuera Sheds project is a testament to our evolution into the sustainability era," Elliot proudly states. "It's about more than just recycling materials; it's about finding innovative solutions that reduce carbon footprints and promote sustainability in construction."
A Partnership Built on Trust
Throughout their journey, the relationship between Steelworks and Grace Team Accounting has been a cornerstone of their success. "Having Michael’s advice on financial analysis and cost management has been instrumental," Elliot affirms. "It’s not just about numbers; it’s about having a partner who understands the business landscape and helps us navigate future challenges."
As Steelworks looks ahead to the move to their new Tauriko facility, the future appears bright. "The new facility is tailored to our needs, offering greater efficiency and the potential for even more innovation," Elliot shares. "We’re excited about the opportunities ahead and grateful for the support that has helped us get here."
From surviving a global financial crisis to leading the charge in sustainable construction, Steelworks’ journey is a powerful example of resilience, innovation, and the importance of strong partnerships. With the continued support of Grace Team Accounting, they are well-positioned to continue their legacy of excellence for years to come.
